What Is CSA N299?

CSA N299 provides a specialized quality assurance framework for organizations working within Canada.

CSA N299 is a series of Canadian quality assurance standards specific to the nuclear industry, addressing the supply of items and services to nuclear power plants. The applicable level varies based on the safety and quality significance of the products or services provided.

At LeanCore, we collaborate with your team to foster continuous improvement by developing and strengthening the processes, documentation, controls, and quality practices necessary to satisfy the appropriate CSA N299 requirements. Whether you're enhancing an existing ISO 9001 system or implementing a comprehensive nuclear quality assurance program from the ground up while utilizing lean manufacturing principles, we ensure that the process remains clear, practical, and audit-ready.

How We Can Help

Scientist inspecting equipment in a lab.

Gap Assessment

Review your existing quality management system (QMS) and identify gaps against the applicable CSA N299 requirements to facilitate continuous improvement in your processes, especially as you consider lean manufacturing practices.

Quality Assurance Program Development

Develop or strengthen the quality assurance framework, processes, responsibilities, and controls necessary for your scope of supply, ensuring alignment with lean manufacturing principles and supporting continuous improvement through effective QMS implementation.

Documentation & Traceability

Establish practical documentation, records, traceability, and document control practices to support nuclear quality requirements, while also focusing on continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles for effective QMS implementation.

Process & Supplier Controls

Help strengthen operational and supplier-related controls through continuous improvement initiatives to support consistent quality and compliance throughout the supply chain in line with lean manufacturing principles and effective QMS implementation.

Implementation Support

Collaborate with your team to integrate CSA N299 requirements into your existing processes and day-to-day operations, focusing on continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles as part of your QMS implementation.

Internal Audit & Readiness

Conduct a thorough assessment of your system to identify any remaining gaps, support corrective actions, and ensure your organization is well-prepared for customer or certification-related audits. This approach fosters continuous improvement and aligns with lean manufacturing principles, especially during QMS implementation.

CSA N299 is a series of Canadian quality assurance standards specific to the nuclear industry, covering the supply of items and services to nuclear power plants. It's published by the CSA Group and required for organizations supplying Canada's nuclear sector.

The N299 series is tiered by the safety/quality significance of what you're supplying — N299.1 applies to the highest-significance items and services, with N299.2 and N299.3 applying to progressively lower-significance categories. The right tier depends on your specific scope of supply.

If you're supplying items or services to a Canadian nuclear facility, CSA N299 compliance (at the appropriate tier) is typically a contractual requirement from the utility or prime contractor, even where it isn't a separate government mandate.

CSA N299 builds on a quality management foundation similar to ISO 9001 but adds nuclear-sector-specific requirements around traceability, documentation control, and quality assurance rigor. Many organizations implement ISO 9001 and CSA N299 together as a combined program.

Timelines depend heavily on which tier applies and your current quality system maturity — organizations with an existing ISO 9001 system can often move faster since much of the documentation and process foundation already exists.
