ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). It provides a framework for identifying workplace hazards, reducing risk, and continually improving employee health and safety performance.

ISO 45001 replaced OHSAS 18001 as the global standard for occupational health and safety. It places greater emphasis on leadership involvement, worker participation, and integrating health and safety into overall business strategy rather than treating it as a standalone program.

Regulatory compliance and ISO 45001 certification are related but not the same thing. ISO 45001 formalizes your safety management into an auditable system that goes beyond minimum legal compliance, and is often required by clients or used to demonstrate safety leadership in your industry.

Similar to ISO 9001, most small-to-mid-sized businesses complete implementation in roughly 3–6 months, depending on your current safety documentation and how quickly hazard assessments and worker consultation processes can be completed.

Yes, this is common and efficient. All three standards share a common structure (the ISO Harmonized Structure), so an integrated management system covering quality, environment, and safety together often takes less combined effort than three separate implementations.

Construction, manufacturing, oil & gas, and any organization with physical/operational safety risk pursue ISO 45001, often driven by client requirements, insurance considerations, or a genuine commitment to reducing workplace incidents.
